The Hill – South Pars gas field attacked: Iran state media
Iranian state media reported Wednesday that facilities at the country’s South Pars natural gas field were targeted, according to The Associated Press (AP).
Iranian state television and the state-run IRNA news agency reported the attack in Iran’s southern Bushehr province. Neither the U.S. nor Israel has taken responsibility for the strike, but Majed al-Ansari, a spokesperson for the Qatari Foreign Ministry, blamed Israel.
Qatar shares the field with Iran, but only the Iranian side was attacked on Wednesday.
“Targeting energy infrastructure constitutes a threat to global energy security, as well as to the peoples of the region & its environment,” al-Ansari wrote on the social platform X.
The U.S. and Israel have targeted Iranian energy facilities throughout the conflict, which has extended to its third week. In response to the latest attack on the South Pars field, Iranian state television said the country will target oil and gas infrastructure in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the AP reported.
The U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliation has sparked a wider regional conflict and sparked an increase in global energy prices — as Iran has limited shipping through the key Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. military on Tuesday dropped multiple 5,000 deep-penetrator bombs on Iranian anti-ship missile sites near the passageway.
Back in the U.S., the average price of a gallon of regular gas is more than $3.84 Wednesday, over $0.90 higher than a month ago, according to AAA.
Also this week, the Iranian Far News Agency confirmed that Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was killed in Israeli airstrikes.
As of Tuesday, at least 1,354 Iranian civilians, including at least 207 children, have also died since the conflict began on Feb. 28, according to the Iran-based Human Rights Activists News Agency.
